Open Data API to support the 'hack day' at the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems
The 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems was held in Melbourne during October 2016. VicRoads engaged Geoplex to develop a cloud solution for ingesting live data and publishing this data via a series of OGC compliant web services. The web services were required for the conference hackathon.
Data published via the API includes; emergency road closures, roadworks and events, Bluetooth travel times, and variable speed limit signs.
Geoplex developed a scalable API platform built on open source software and hosted on Amazon Web Services (Sydney Region). Datasets are stored securely in a PostgreSQL database and served to users via an API offering OGC compliant WMS and WFS services.
Automatic load tools were developed to pull data updates from FTP sites for load into the PostgreSQL database.
The API provides OGC standards compliant access to data via WMS and WFS and API security via developer API keys.
Robust architectural design ensures scalability and high availability into the future. Extensive monitoring and logging capabilities for tracking usage is available via a reporting dashboard.
